The Terrible Mistake I Made Working Late

Late at night a few weeks ago, I was doing some website maintenance, and accidentally deleted my site’s database. Without a backup.

After I got over the horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, I started devising a strategy for getting everything back online.

My first move was to get the basics online again — the home, about, contact pages, and the like.

The five years’ worth of blog posts will have to be added incrementally.

For those who want to know, I’m using a combination of the Wayback Machine and the RSS feed content that is still in my Feedly account to copy and paste the content into the site. Fortunately the files were intact, but the database was gone.

If none of this made sense to you, that’s okay. Just know that I don’t need to be doing a whole lot of “heavy lifting” late at night when I’m tired and my judgement isn’t so great. I might do something dumb like wipe out my site!

But — like I’ve said before, I have all the tools at my disposal to get out of a jam.

Hopefully in the next week or two I’ll start putting new stuff on the blog. See you soon.
